This involves a series of blood tests at regular intervals throughout the day which allows us to monitor any changes in the glucose levels and possibly adjust the amount of insulin you will be required to give your pet, depending on their results.
To prepare for your pets day stay in hospital we ask for you to continue your normal routine of feeding and giving your pet their first dose of insulin that morning.
It is best to have your pet at the clinic between 8:15am and 10:00am so we are able to start testing as early as possible. Please make sure that on arrival you inform the nurses on reception what time you fed and gave insulin to your pet, as well as the dose.
The blood tests are performed roughly over a 6-hour period. Therefore, if you call us at the clinic on 9274 1845 at around 5.00pm we will be able to let you know the outcome of the results and of any changes if necessary.
HOME CARE
Once your pet is ready to come home the veterinarian will go over any changes if necessary in a discharge consult.
When you arrive home with your pet please feed and dose them as required.
An important part of treatment is consistency in the timing of feeding and medicating your pet. Please note that you should not change the dose of insulin without first consulting your veterinarian.
Diabetic animals do need to be carefully monitored for signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) such as vomiting, sluggishness, difficulty seeing, disorientation, excessive salivation, and in very advanced cases, seizures. If you notice any of these symptoms with your pet, please contact the clinic immediately on 9274 1845.
