Tooth Root Abscesses

We occasionally see pets with sore, swollen and tender faces/muzzles and sometimes even an open wound where a tooth or multiple teeth have become so diseased that a nasty tooth root abscess has developed.
Our sincere hope here at the hospital is to never see any one of your precious pets get to this stage.

What is a tooth root abscess?
A pocket of infection (pus!) that forms at the base of the tooth as it becomes more diseased.

Risks involved with abscesses:
If left, the infection within the abscess can infect the surrounding tissues and be carried in the blood and cause infection or problems elsewhere in the body, such as the liver and heart.

Prevention:
- Regular dental checks
- Regular dental scale and polishes at our hospital
- Brushing your pets teeth
- Chewing
- Dental diets
