Cat Care

Companions for Life

Cats are amazing companions and make wonderful pets. However, it's important to recognise that owning a cat is a long-term commitment, as they can live for 15-20 years. Before bringing a cat or kitten home, it's recommended to contact your local council to inquire about regulations concerning curfews, containment, desexing, and microchipping.
When it comes to housing, cats have simple needs. Whether they prefer indoors or outdoors, provide them with a cozy basket, box, or chair in a safe and secure place. Many cat owners are opting for cat enclosures, offering a protected outdoor space that keeps cats safe from neighborhood fights and prevents them from hunting local wildlife. For indoor cats, it's beneficial to provide a scratching post to keep their claws healthy and reduce the chances of furniture being scratched.
Maintaining cleanliness is important to cats. With a suitable litter tray filled with cat litter, cats can easily be trained to use it. The litter tray should be cleaned daily to remove waste, and the litter itself should be changed regularly. Place the litter tray in a quiet and private location, and consider having multiple trays if you have more than one cat (one tray per cat, plus an extra one). All cats need exercise. If cats have outdoor access, they naturally enjoy climbing trees and fences. For indoor cats, offering a scratch pole or an indoor cat gym provides them with an alternative for climbing and perching. Providing elevated perching spots also enriches their environment.
Grooming is essential for most cats to remove excess hair and prevent furballs or matted fur. Short-haired cats can typically groom themselves, while long-haired cats require daily grooming from their owners. Regular brushing, especially during shedding seasons, helps prevent hairballs. Additionally, specialised food designed to reduce hairballs can aid in processing shed hair. Cats generally do not require bathing unless there are specific circumstances.
When it comes to feeding, most cats prefer grazing, so offering small amounts of food throughout the day is recommended. Young and healthy cats require a diet high in protein and fat. We can provide guidance on choosing the most suitable cat food formulation based on your cat's nutritional needs. Older cats or those with certain medical conditions may require a prescription diet, which we can discuss as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Always ensure fresh water is accessible, especially for cats on a dry food diet. Avoid offering cow's milk, as it can cause stomach upsets.
Regular health check-ups are crucial for cats. Annual visits allow us to diagnose, treat, and prevent health issues before they become severe. Routine vaccinations, worming, and flea control are essential for feline medical care. We can also provide guidance on nutrition, behavior, training, and life-stage treatments tailored to your cat's specific needs.
We warmly invite you to book an appointment with us to discuss how to optimise your cat's mental and physical well-being.
