There are additional services offered for routine surgeries. If your pet is older or higher risk and these services are recommended, your vet will discuss this with you. However, they can also be added optionally at an extra cost.
Pre-anaesthetic blood testing is offered for all dogs and cats undergoing general anaesthesia. This testing is performed in the clinic, usually on the morning of the anaesthetic. It is used to check hepatic & renal function to ensure it is safe to give anaesthesia and perform the surgery. Whilst this test is strongly recommended in senior pets, it is still beneficial in young healthy pets to obtain your pet’s baseline values.
Intravenous fluid therapy is another option offered during anaesthetics. IV fluids help maintain blood pressure during surgery. It involves administration of saline-type fluids directly into the vein, and is extremely important in prolonged surgeries, and in unwell or geriatric patients. It is also beneficial to have direct intravenous access in the case of an emergency.
