FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE OUTBREAK
In May 2022, over 1000 cases of Foot and Mouth Disease have been confirmed in four provinces of East Java, Indonesia.
This is of great concern to Australia and the Australian Government Department of Agriculture.
Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals including sheep, cattle, pigs, goats, buffalo, camels, alpaca, llama and deer. It is not the same as hand food and mouth in people.
FMD is excreted in breath, saliva, mucous, milk and faeces.Animals can become infected through inhalation, ingestion and direct contact. FMD virus can also be spread on wool, hair, grass or straw; by the wind; or by mud or manure sticking to footwear, clothing, livestock equipment or vehicle tyres.
Signs of foot-and-mouth disease vary depending on the species infected and the strain of the virus but anyone keeping or working cloven-hoofed animals should be aware of the some basic signs of FMD: blisters on the mouth and drooling or limping animals.
We encourage anyone working with or keeping any of these animals to be vigilant and have an updated biosecurity plan in place.
Anyone who sees livestock exhibiting any unusual signs is urged to call their local veterinarian or Australia’s Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888.
