Microchipping

A microchip is a small, rice-sized device that is implanted under a pet’s skin, typically between the shoulder blades, during a routine veterinary consultation. Each microchip contains a unique identification code, which is registered in a national database. This provides a reliable and permanent method of identifying pets, significantly increasing the likelihood of reuniting lost animals with their owners. Microchips can also help verify ownership in cases of dispute. In several Australian states, microchipping pets is now a legal requirement.

It is important to update your pet’s details on the national registry whenever you move or change your contact information.

If a pet is lost and brought to a veterinary clinic or animal shelter, a microchip scanner is used to read the unique identification code. The staff can then access the national database to obtain the owner’s name, address, and contact number, facilitating a prompt reunion between the pet and its owner.
