Puppy and Dog Vaccinations: Protecting Your Best Friend

Vaccinations are one of the most important steps in keeping your puppy or dog healthy. They help your pet’s immune system recognise and fight off dangerous diseases before they become serious—or even life-threatening. Think of vaccines as a shield that keeps your furry friend safe from illnesses like parvovirus, distemper, rabies, and kennel cough.

Why Vaccinations Matter
Puppies are especially vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing. By following a recommended vaccination schedule, you give them protection when they need it most. Even adult dogs benefit from regular boosters to maintain immunity and prevent outbreaks of preventable diseases.

Puppy Vaccinations
Puppy vaccinations are essential for protecting young dogs from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases. In the Whitsundays, core vaccinations for your pet include C4, which protects against canine distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus, as well as Bordetella, Leptospirosis, and the ProHeart injection for long-term heartworm prevention.

The first C4 vaccine is administered at 6–8 weeks of age, with booster doses given at 12 and 16 weeks. Puppies receive their initial Bordetella, Leptospirosis, and ProHeart vaccinations at 12 weeks, followed by a Leptospirosis booster at 16 weeks and the ProHeart booster at 6 months, ensuring comprehensive protection as they grow.

 

 

Adult Dog Vaccination

As your dog reaches adulthood, maintaining protection through regular vaccinations is essential. Core vaccines, including C4 (protecting against canine distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus), Bordetella, Leptospirosis, and the ProHeart injection for heartworm prevention, are all administered annually to ensure ongoing protection. Regular veterinary check-ups help tailor the vaccination schedule to your dog’s lifestyle and risk factors, keeping them healthy and safeguarded against serious diseases throughout their adult life.

After Vaccination Care

Vaccinations are generally safe, but some dogs may experience mild, short-term side effects. Common reactions include temporary soreness or swelling at the injection site, mild lethargy, reduced appetite, or a low-grade fever within 24–48 hours of vaccination. In rare cases, dogs may experience allergic reactions, such as facial swelling, hives, vomiting, or difficulty breathing, which require immediate veterinary attention. Most side effects are minor and resolve on their own, but it is important to monitor your pet closely after each vaccination and contact your veterinarian if any unusual or severe symptoms occur.

VACCINATE AGAINST

Canine Parvovirus

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect dogs of all ages, though it is most prevalent in puppies and young dogs. The virus primarily targets the intestinal tract, leading to severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloody diarrhoea, persistent vomiting, and acute abdominal pain. In some cases, infection can be fatal, even with intensive veterinary intervention.

Transmission occurs primarily through contact with infected faeces. The virus is remarkably resilient to the environment and can remain infectious for extended periods, even after visible contamination has been removed. Consequently, direct contact between dogs is not required for disease spread. Effective prevention requires thorough environmental disinfection using potent antiviral agents to eliminate the virus from contaminated areas.

Outbreaks of canine parvovirus are common, particularly during the summer months, with an estimated 20,000 dogs affected annually in Australia. Early recognition, vaccination, and strict hygiene practices are essential in controlling the spread of this serious disease.

Canine Distemper Virus

Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect dogs of all ages, with young puppies being at greatest risk.

Clinical signs are variable and may include fever, coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, and lethargy. In more severe cases, neurological symptoms such as muscle tremors, seizures, and paralysis can develop as the disease progresses.

Treatment is generally supportive, as there is no specific cure, and recovery rates are low. Dogs that survive may experience permanent neurological damage, highlighting the critical importance of prevention through vaccination and strict hygiene measures.

Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (Kennel Cough)

Canine infectious respiratory disease, commonly referred to as kennel cough, is caused by a range of highly contagious viruses and bacteria. It is easily transmitted in environments where dogs congregate, such as parks, grooming salons, doggy day care, dog shows, obedience schools, and boarding kennels.

Key infectious agents associated with this condition include the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica and viruses such as canine parainfluenza, adenovirus type 2, and distemper.

Affected dogs typically exhibit a dry, persistent hacking cough that can last for several weeks. While generally non-fatal, the condition is distressing for both pets and owners and can significantly impact working or sporting dogs. In some cases, particularly in puppies or immunocompromised dogs, secondary infections such as pneumonia may develop.

Canine Leptospirosis

Canine leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease that poses a significant health risk in certain regions and can result in high mortality rates. The disease is primarily transmitted via the urine of infected rodents and can infect dogs through ingestion of contaminated food or water (for example, drinking from puddles), consumption of infected rodents, or via rodent bites.

The risk of leptospirosis is higher in areas with large rodent populations, such as urban environments, near waste disposal sites, or in sugarcane-growing regions. Incidence may also increase following prolonged wet weather or construction activities, which can disrupt rodent habitats and force populations into closer contact with dogs.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans. Human infection may occur through ingestion of contaminated food or water or through exposure of open wounds to the bacteria.

Infectious Canine Hepatitis (Canine Adenovirus Type 1)

Infectious canine hepatitis (ICH), caused by canine adenovirus type 1, is a highly contagious viral disease with potentially severe outcomes. Dogs of any age can be affected, though severe cases are uncommon in dogs over two years of age.

Clinical signs include high fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and acute abdominal pain. In severe cases, death can occur within 24 to 36 hours. Dogs that survive the infection may develop long-term liver or kidney complications and can act as carriers, shedding the virus and transmitting it to other dogs for several months.

Canine Coronavirus

Canine coronavirus is a contagious viral infection that primarily affects the gastrointestinal system, particularly in puppies and young dogs. Clinical signs may include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhoea, which can persist for several days in some cases.

While most dogs recover with appropriate care, the disease can be severe or even fatal, particularly if coinfection with other pathogens, such as canine parvovirus, occurs. Supportive treatment and good hygiene practices are essential to reduce the risk of transmission and complications.

Canine Heartworm Disease

Canine heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by the parasitic worm Dirofilaria immitis. The worms reside in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels, leading to severe cardiovascular and respiratory complications. If left untreated, heartworm infection can result in heart failure, lung disease, organ damage, and ultimately death.

Heartworm is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it ingests immature heartworm larvae, which then develop within the mosquito. When the mosquito bites another dog, the larvae are deposited into the dog’s bloodstream, where they mature into adult worms over several months.

Clinical signs can be subtle in early stages but may include coughing, fatigue, exercise intolerance, weight loss, and difficulty breathing. Advanced infections can lead to heart failure, fluid accumulation in the abdomen, and collapse.

Prevention is critical and is typically achieved through the use of monthly heartworm preventatives, mosquito control measures, and regular veterinary screening. Early detection and prevention are far safer and more effective than treating advanced disease.
