Zelda van der Merwe

Dr. Zelda graduated from Onderstepoort in Pretoria, South Africa in 1997. After graduating, she worked in private small animal practice in South Africa for 11 years.

In 2008 she relocated with her family to Perth and has been working as a small animal clinician and surgeon at a corporate veterinary group.

Dr. Zelda opened the Sorrento Animal Hospital in September 2015 and aims to bring excellence in pet care to her patients, awesome service to her clients and above all creating a veterinary hospital which is a pleasure to visit. She has a special interest in small animal medicine and preventative health care.

Dr. Zelda has three dogs of her own (Isla, Jelly and Peanut), a weiro named Corrie, two lovely Maine Coon cats named Jabulani and Matewis as well as two children and a husband (featured further below). In her spare time, she enjoys reading a good book and baking.

Ingrid Herbst

Veterinarian (BVSc)

This is me with lovely Lika.

I graduated from the University of Pretoria, Onderstepoort South- Africa in 2003.  After a year in mixed practice in South-Africa I moved to the UK for a year and a half working in a small animal hospital, after which I returned to sunny South Africa in 2006 all the way through to 2018 working with small animals.

I relocated to Australia with my husband, two kids and our Australian Cattle dogs in 2018 where I have worked at a small animal hospital South of the river in Perth before joining Sorrento Animal Hospital.

In my spare time I love spending time with my family outdoors or running.

Ingrid is available for appointments on alternate Mondays and Wednesdays, Fridays and every 4th Saturday.  Have a look online for available appointments (or give us a call).

Elise Mitchell

Veterinarian (BVSc)

Born in Melbourne and graduated Melbourne Uni 2011, Dr Elise worked in small animal practice in Warrnambool, Victoria before moving to the UK for 7 years where she worked in small animal practice in Suffolk.

Dr Elise returned to Australia in 2022 with her husband Peter, daughter Amber, and their three-legged Kelpie Bart.

UPDATE!!   Dr Elise will be on parental leave for a while as she has also added another human to the household!  Welcome George!

"Bart was originally a working dog, but he lost his left front leg after it was paralysed in a quad bike accident when he was only 8 months old. He has lived his best life travelling around the world with us and is now 12 years old. I love travelling and exploring the great outdoors.  I love most aspects of small animal general practice, and have a particular interest in ultrasonography."    Great news Dr Elise, we have a brand-new ultrasound machine at Sorrento Animal Hospital for you to help our wonderful patients with!

Elise is available for appointments on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and every 4th Saturday.  Have a look online for available appointments.

Mollie Bower

Veterinarian (BVSc)

Dr Mollie graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2019. After graduation she moved back home to work in a small animal general practice on the south coast of England for 18 months. In March 2021 she moved to Australia and worked in an emergency hospital in Perth. Mollie joined the WAVES team in January 2022 as an emergency and critical care veterinarian.

She has an interest in all aspects of veterinary medicine and is working towards her Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Emergency and Critical Care).

You will see Dr Mollie a lot at Sorrento Animal Hospital as she has joined this great team on a full-time basis... and you guessed it, not just for emergencies ðŸ˜€

TJ

TJ has been with us since 2019, first as a nursing student and then as a qualified veterinary nurse.  Like everyone working at SorrentoVet she loves all pets big and small!   Speaking about small, she is now sporting her own small human too... and a new cat called Mr. Butter!

UPDATE:  Now TJ has added another little human to the fold.  She will be on parental leave for a while.  Good luck TJ and welcome Musa (Arabic translation of Moses).

Phillippa is our incredibly capable and experienced reception manager.  Everybody at the practice breathes a sigh of relief when she walks in the door ready to serve our awesome clients and patients in front.

Lauren Hislop

Welcome to the best vet team Lauren!  When Lauren came for the interview with us, we told her that we are on a mission to be the best veterinary team in Perth.  We meant it, and that is why we will work on continuously improving our patient care, client service, and team experience!

Mildred Basil

Client Relations (Cat scan operator )

Dr Mildred Basil

Mildred came to us as a stray from another vet hospital just after we opened.  She has been with us since 2015.  She is the most loving cat and loves cuddles, especially when we are on lunch.  Does it have something to do with our food I wonder?  We all think she has the biggest, most beautiful eyes.

She eagerly assists the vets with writing their notes at the end of the day (mainly so she can get some treats😊). She also loves sleeping a lot, sitting in boxes, but mainly she loves food.  Did someone mention she loves food?

You might not see her often as she does not really like to go to reception, she reckons it is too busy for her.

Mildred has hip dysplasia and a dodgy left knee.  She had a hip replacement and knee surgery in 2022 at WAVES, one of the specialist referral centres in Perth.  She is one of the few cats in Perth with a bionic hip.

Keep up the good work Mildred!

Mariska van der Merwe

Mariska is an animal lover and currently studying Graphic Design at Murdoch University.  You'll find her all the way from reception to patient care.

Wihan van der Merwe

Wihan is a 3rd year veterinary science student at Murdoch University.  He will be doing work experience shifts while being mentored by the best vets in Perth (see above :-)).  A bit biased, but for the record, the best vets are SorrentoVets !

The cutie with the lovely red hair is Isla, an Irish / Red Setter.

Anton van der Merwe

Practice Owner (Husband, handy man, IT and back-office guy.)

Anton is the behind-the-scenes guy trying his utmost to keep the moving parts well oiled.
It is our dream and vision that Sorrento Animal Hospital will be a pleasure for clients, patients, and employees to be at. A place where you get the best advice and service without the need for smooth-talking.

We are working to provide a great service and improve how and what we are offering on a daily basis.
